HIV/AIDS Project:
The Healing Blanket
An Aboriginal Video Series for HIV/AIDS

Funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada

The Healing Blanket is a DVD on HIV/AIDS based on the four cardinal points of the Medicine Wheel. The Medicine Wheel is significant to Aboriginal (Inuit, Métis, First Nations) culture and traditional healing practices.

The Healing Blanket provides an opportunity to further understand Aboriginal culture and explores the process of effective healing. What’s more, the DVD shares expertise, knowledge and experiences (both traditional and “mainstream”) as they relate to HIV/AIDS. The goal is to achieve positive outcomes in the “delivery of the message”, education, prevention, treatment and support of HIV/AIDS within the Aboriginal community.

The Healing Blanket provides complimentary information through a DVD format. The video follows the four quadrants of the Medicine Wheel:

• The Eastern Door - Physical Aspects
• The Southern Door - Emotional Aspects
• The Western Door - Mental Aspects
• The Northern Door - Spiritual Aspects

The Healing Blanket is a national project. Loretta S. Todd, an Aboriginal filmmaker, directed and co-produced the series with Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health.
