Aboriginal Health Promoter (full-time)

The Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health is an award-winning Health Access Centre that provides holistic primary health care to First Nation, Métis and Inuit people living in Ottawa - one of the fastest growing and diverse urban Aboriginal communities in Canada. Wabano is a fast-paced, client-oriented organization that models the Aboriginal values of balance, respect and community interdependence.

As an Aboriginal Health Promoter with a post-secondary degree in Health Promotion (or related field) and two years experience in social &/or health services, you will want to consider this exceptional opportunity.

Wabano is seeking a Health Promoter for a full-time one year-contractual position.

Responsibilities:

  • The Aboriginal health promoter will help urban Aboriginal people improve and increase control over their health through the following:
  • develop culturally-appropriate strategies for promoting health at local level;
  • develop, implement, and evaluate culturally-based health promotion programs and activities to promote healthy lifestyle choices;
  • develop the public health skills and capacities of individuals and groups and empower them to make healthy choices (nutrition, physical activity and commercial tobacco prevention);
  • develop and support local alliances to broaden the local response to health inequalities;
  • develop and deliver culturally-specific training (for example, to health professionals, volunteers, community groups) to meet those identified training needs;
  • provide specialist advice and resources to other agencies, such as schools, and local non-profit organizations;
  • ensure that work is underpinned by both sound, up-to-date knowledge of health promotion theory and traditional Aboriginal teachings
  • Develop education and health promotion materials for the urban Aboriginal community, that meet program objectives and community needs.

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • A University degree in Health Promotion (or related field) combined with 2 years related experience in program development, implementation, evaluation, and project management
  • Knowledge, sensitivity and awareness of the history, culture, and unique needs of the urban Aboriginal population.
  • Minimum 2 years experience with working with the Aboriginal community
  • Excellent social marketing and public relations skills to effectively promote healthy lifestyles to target groups
  • Advanced communication skills to persuasively communicate complex health messages
  • Self starter with ability to be team player
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret and apply data
  • Excellent computer skills in MS Office and MS Outlook
  • Willingness to work flexible hours (some evenings and occasional weekend work)
